The Evelyn Blanket has lots of texture and is a perfect way to learn different types of stitches. In designing this blanket, I wanted something that was pretty, but with minimal to no color changes. The pattern is written for baby blanket size, but it can be easily adjusted to whatever size you choose.
Finished Size
Approx 30″ x 30″

950 yards of DK weight yarn
4 mm crochet hook
2 stitch markers

Ch(s) = chain(s)
Hdc = half double crochet
Fpdc = front post double crochet
Fphdc = front post half double crochet
Blo = back loop only
Tlo = third loop only
St(s) = stitch(es)

Additional Notes
This pattern doesn’t use chains to begin a new row. Instead of the chain, the first stitch goes directly into the last stitch of the previous row. If you prefer to use chains, then chain 2 in place of the 1st half double crochet.
It’s important to use stitch markers to mark the first last stitches of each row and also to count your stitches. The last stitch sometimes appears to be hidden, and it may seem like you’re putting your stitch into the side instead of the top. (If you are beginning with a chain 2 instead, this may not apply.) Count your stitches if you are unsure of where the last stitch should go.
Blanket Pattern
Chain 126 (or an odd number that is a multiple of 3 + 2 +1 for your desired width).
Row 1: Beginning in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in each st across, turn. (125 stitches, each row going forward should be 125 stitches)

Row 2: Hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 3: Hdc in the first st. Then, hdc between sts until the 2nd to last st. Hdc in the last st, turn.

Row 4: Hdc in each st across. Turn.

Row 5: Hdc in the first st, sk 1 st, *3 hdc in the next st, sk 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * until there are 3 sts left. Sk 2 sts, hdc in the last st, turn.

Row 6: Hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 7: Hdc in the 1st st. Hdc in the tlo for each st until the 2nd to last st. Hdc in the last st, turn.

Row 8: Hdc in the 1st, *sk 1 st, fpdc in the next st, hdc in the skipped st.* Repeat from * to * until there are 2 sts left. Fphdc in the next st, hdc in the last st.

Rows 9 until desired length: Repeat rows 1 thru 8.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Border Pattern
Shell stitch = 5 dc in 1 stitch.
Note: To do the round of shell sts (the 3rd round), the total number of stitches on each side needs to be an odd number that is a multiple of 3 + 2 excluding the corner st. To avoid doing this math or if the stitch count is off for some reason, you can fudge the number of stitches by reducing the shell by one and/or skipping only 1 st instead of 2. Try to make the shells as even as possible. The most important thing is to make sure 5 dc crochet stitches go into each corner.
Round 1: Join in any st. Sc in each st around, placing 3 sts in the corner st. (Optional: Mark the center st of the corner st with a stitch marker so you always know where the 3 corner sts should go.) Slp st into the first st.
Round 2: Hdc in the blo of each st round, placing 3 sts in the corner st. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Round 3 (Optional): Join yarn 2 sts before the corner st and sc in the same st. Sk 2 stitches, 5 dc in the corner st, sk 2 sts, sc in the next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st.
