After a busy day, sitting down to crochet a simple blanket is the only thing I want to do. Usually, it’s one that uses only 1 or 2 stitches repeatedly. The Criss Cross Crochet Blanket is one of those blankets. The main stitch of the blanket is criss cross double crochet, and it’s repeated until complete. The border of the blanket is 2 rows of single crochet (3 in the corners), and the final row is shell stitch. I hope you enjoy making this blanket as much as I do.
For the blanket in the picture, I used Hobbii Amigo XL yarn with a 6 mm hook. The colors are Light Lilac A48 (a little over 2 skeins), Light Pink A56 (1.5 skeins), and Ecru A02 (1.5 skeins).
MATERIALS
Worsted weight yarn in 3 colors (can also use yarn in any weight)
6mm hook (or the hook that corresponds to the yarn weight)
Yarn Needle
Scissors
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
st/sts = stitch/stitches
ch = chain
sk = skip or skipped
slp st = slip stitch
SPECIAL STITCHES
Shell Stitch = 5 DC in 1 stitch.
BLANKET PATTERN
Chain an even number + 1. (To do a shell stitch border, you need an even number that’s a multiple of 6 + 5.)
Row 1: SC in each stitch across, ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: DC in first st, *sk 1 st, DC in the next st, DC in sk st,* repeat from * to * until the next to last st. DC in the last st., ch 1, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until you’ve reached the desired length of the blanket. Change colors every 4 rows. For the shell stitch border, the total number of rows should equal a multiple of 6 + 5. (If changing color for the border, fasten off, and weave in the end. If not, ch 1 and turn to begin the border.)
BORDER PATTERN
If changing color for the border, join the new yarn to the 3rd stitch of the row. If not, then slip st until you reach the 3rd st of the row.)
Round 1: Beginning in the 3rd st, SC in each st around, placing 3 SC in each corner, slp st to the first st, ch 1. On the sides, place 2 SC for every row.
Round 2: Repeat round 1.
(You can end here for a simple single crochet border, for shell stitch go to the next step.)
Round 3 (optional):
1st side — SC in the 1st st, *sk 2 sts, shell st in the next, sk 2 sts, SC in the next st.* Repeat from * to * until you have 2 stitches left before the corner. Skip those 2 stitches and shell stitch in the corner st.
2nd side — *Sk 2 st, shell stich in the next, sk 2 sts, SC in the next st,* Repeat from * to * until you have 2 stitches left before the corner. Skip those 2 stitches and shell stitch in the corner st.
Repeat for third 3rd and 4th sides, and slip st to the first st. Fasten off, weave in your ends, and enjoy :).
