The Pastel Rainbow Shells Baby Blanket uses one of my favorite stitches throughout the pattern. The shell stitch is easy, and produces a beautiful blanket in the end. I also like it because you don’t necessarily have to count stitches because each row ends and begins a certain way.
The blanket in the picture is made with Hobbii Amigo yarns which is a light worsted, DK weight yarn. They recommend a 4 to 5mm hook, and I used 4.5mm to make this blanket. The pattern can be made with any colors and any weight yarn as long as you have the correct hook size for the yarn. For this blanket, I used the following colors:
Delicate Rose (A47)
Light Peach (A46)
Primrose (A35)
Mint (A29)
Light Turquoise (A21)
Cornflower (A17)
Lavender (A59)
MATERIALS:
Yarn in 7 colors (approx 1,100 yds total)
Crochet hook according to the weight of the yarn you choose
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch Markers (optional)
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
slp st(s) = slip stitch(es)
st(s) = stitch(es)
BLANKET PATTERN
Chain a multiple of 6 +1 for your desired size.
Row 1: SC in each stitch across, ch. 1.
Row 2: *SC in the first stitch, sk 2 sts, 5 DC in the next st, sk 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the row ending in a SC. Ch 3 and turn. (Ch 3 counts and the first DC of the next row.)
Rows 3: Place 2 DC in the same st as the ch 3. * Sk 2 sts, SC in next stitch (this is center of the shell stitch in the previous row), sk 2 sts, 5 DC in the next st (this is the SC of the previous row).* Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left. Sk 2 sts, then place 3 DC in the last st.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you’ve reached the desired length for the blanket. Change colors after every 2 rows.
BORDER (SC border)
Round 1: SC in each st around. Place 3 SC in the corners. Slp st to the first st. (As a guide for the sides, place 2 SC for every row that ends in DC and 1 SC for the rows that end in SC. Watch and adjust to make sure you don’t have too many or too few SC which could result in curling or pulling causing uneven sides.)
Repeat round 1 until you’ve reached the desired look. Use the same color or you can switch colors after each round. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Note: The border in the picture is 2 rows SC, and then on the 3rd row, I experimented and did the following: sk 2 sts, DC in next 3 sts, then DC in first sk st and then DC the 2nd sk st. and the corner is 1 SC, 1 DC, 1 SC in same st. I don’t have the exact st count for this because it was just for fun :). If there wasn’t enough stitches left before the corner to complete the full series of sts, then I modified it by reducing the number of DC after the skipped stitches.
