Newport Baby Blanket

The Newport Baby Blanket is a beautiful blanket full of texture with a pattern that repeats every four rows. It’s the perfect project to make if you don’t want to think too much about the pattern or the stitches. For this blanket, I used Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday DK Blend yarn with a 3.5mm hook. The colors are Pine, Goldenrod, Cerulean, and Ecru.

ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

blo = back loop only

dc = double crochet

fphdc = front post half double crochet

bphdc = back post half double crochet

slp st(s) = slip stitch / stitches

st/sts = stitch/stitches

ch = chain

PATTERN NOTES

Instead of chaining 2 to begin a row, this pattern uses chain 1 and then dc/hdc directly in the first stitch. If you prefer to use the chain 3/2, then count that as the first dc/hdc and start with dc/hdc in the next st.

BLANKET PATTERN

Ch. 145 (or any even number +1)

Row 1: In color A, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (144 sts – each row should have 144 sts).

Row 2: Hdc blo in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Hdc in the first stitch, *skip 1 st, hdc in the next st, hdc in the skipped st,* repeat from * to * until the end of the row. Hdc in the last st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Hdc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Hdc in the first st, *fphdc in the next st, bphdc in the next st*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row. Hdc into the last st. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 6 thru 21: Repeat rows 2 thru 5 (4 times). Change to color D (to begin the lines separating the colors), ch 1, turn.

Row 22: With color D, hdc blo in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 23: Dc in the first st, *skip the next st, dc in the next st, then dc in the skipped stitch,* repeat from * to * until the end of the row. Dc in the last st. Ch 1, turn.

Rows 24 thru the end: Repeat rows 2 thru 23 (4 times). On the last repeat, skip rows 22 and 23 (end at row 21). For repeat 1 change to color B, repeat 2 change to color C, repeat 3 change to color A, and repeat 4 change to color B. And for rows 22 and 23 (the lines between the color blocks), change to color D.

BORDER PATTERN

Rounds 1-4: Sc in each st around, put 3 sc in the corners, slp st to the first st, ch 1. Change to a new color for every round, starting with color D.

Optional Round 5: In color D, *skip the first, sc in the next st, sc crochet in the skipped st.*, repeat from * to * all around placing 3 sc in the corners. (Note: If you have 1 st left before the corner, sk that st and place 3 sc in the corner, then skip the first st after 3 sc. If you have no sts left before the corner, then just place 3 sc in the corner, and in the next side (after the 3sc), begin with the first st (don’t skip a stitch).
